I’ll admit it. I’m a nerd. I embrace the geek title and everything that it entails. I like comic books, Science Fiction, and superhero movies. There’s nothing wrong with that. However, I will unequivocally state, now that I know better, that I refuse to sacrifice my own health for my nerdy habits.

Sore Neck and Back From Gaming

Several years ago I began to play World of Warcraft. I know, I know, it’s an addiction. The WoW world is so robust and captivating that it’s easy to get sucked in. For awhile there I was playing for several hours every single day, and I began to develop a terrible pain in my lower back and neck. I couldn’t figure out what it was from, though I should’ve known!

I began getting massages once a month from a massage therapist friend of mine, and after remarking on how tight my shoulder muscles were, she asked me if I was a gamer. Now, I don’t wear WoW t-shirts or superhero capes to my massage appointments, so the only way she knew was because of the very specific type of muscle strain that I was presenting.

Ergonomic Gaming Desk to the Rescue!

My friend suggested that I look into improving my gaming posture by investing in an ergonomic gaming desk. This was a relief. At first I thought she was going to suggest that I give up gaming all together, which I’m not really willing to do. After all, gaming is such a great way for me to burn off stress at the end of my day.

Since my massage therapist friend made this recommendation to get an ergonomic gaming desk, I’ve checked a few of them out. The thing about the Mobo that impresses me most is that it is portable and it doesn’t take up much room. The fact that I can clamp the keyboard tray onto my chair, without actually spending money on an entirely new desk, has been quite an incentive for me to try it out.

I’m not an expert on ergonomics, but I feel like it’s crucial to invest in the long-term health of our bodies, no matter what we do with our free time! Nerdy gamers like me, IT people, even regular old office folk can definitely benefit from an ergonomic gaming desk. After all, it’s not the “gaming” part of the desk that’s important, it’s the ergonomics.

Do you have an ergonomics story to share? We’d love to hear it!

Applying the term ergonomics to extended episodes of sitting wasn’t common until computer work became much more integrated into the workplace, in the 1980s. Since then, quite a bit of our assumptions and understandings of ergonomics relates to repetitive, and stationary, office work.

In the past few years, there has been a tremendous amount of new types of chairs populating the marketplace. Many modern offices include kneeling chairs, exercise balls, and traditional curved back office chairs.

What kind of chair do you prefer to use?

The article debunks the belief that keyboards must always be at a certain distance from the monitor, that they should be placed at a very specific height and angle, and that they should be slightly removed from the mouse.

I first heard about the Alexander Technique several weeks, when integrative physician Dr. Weil briefly mentioned it on Twitter. The gist is this: trained specialists help you learn how to have good posture again.

While children naturally have perfect posture, over the years our ability to maintain good posture erodes, dramatically. The Alexander Technique helps you learn to reduce tension so that your posture improves and you no longer suffer the pain and health issues that come with poor posture.

While this article briefly mentions the Alexander Technique, overall the article discusses how if your posture is bad, no chair will save you. In fact, some ergonomics experts have created chairs that are actually worse for posture than old-fashioned straight back chairs were.
